Emma Jack - Press Play Physiotherapy & Pilates

Tell us about yourself

Whether an Olympic level athlete or an individual wishing to remain active with their grandkids, I am passionate about helping people feel their absolute best! I graduated from McMaster University earning both my Bachelor of Kinesiology and Master of Physiotherapy degrees. I later went on to complete a Masters of Clinical Science in Manipulative Therapy at Western University. I am a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy, hold my Diploma is Sport Physiotherapy and am a member of the International Federation of Sport Physical Therapy.

I love my career in sport and orthopaedic physiotherapy and have had the privilege of working with Skate Canada, Canada Basketball, Toronto Rock Lacrosse as well as U-Sport athletes and teams at McMaster and Western University. I acted as a medical lead for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games and am currently a therapist with Hockey Canada’s National Women's Team Program.

Tell us about your business

I opened Press Play in January of 2019 and boy has it been an amazing ride! My mission was to create a fun, positive atmosphere where clients feel they are part of a community and are nurtured to become the best version of themselves. From my décor to music and group rehabilitation offerings, it is my hope that I can make rehab a positive and enjoyable experience. We offer one-on-one physiotherapy services as well as specialized physiotherapy services including pelvic floor physiotherapy, clinical Pilates and running evaluations. Our group rehabilitation classes are also a unique option! Coming up this fall we will be running 3 small group Pilates classes per week as well as an 8-week strength and conditioning for runners program.

What led you to start this business?

In 2017, I started my blog and Instagram account (@pressplayphysio) and, to be honest, things really took off from there. In starting my blog I had no idea it would one day turn into a brick and mortar business! My social media presence started to gain a following and people began to seek me out for physiotherapy services through those mediums. As that continued to happen, I started to think more about how I could better align my values with my work. I come from a family of entrepreneurs so with so much fantastic support around me I took the leap!

As a busy entrepreneur, what do you like to do when you take a break?

As you can tell from my business name, play is so important to me but so is the pause! It can be so easy to get caught up in “busy-ness” so having some fun and downtime is critical. I walk about an hour every morning before work while listening to a podcast- there are so many great things you can learn or discover through podcasts! I am also an avid reader and, in starting a business, I’ve been devouring business and personal development books! I love going to spin class, Pilates (obviously!) and catching up with friends at one of London’s many wonderful coffee shops!

What is the #1 small business book/blog/website you would recommend?

I loved Simon Sinek’s book, "Start with Why". Renowned psychologist Abhraham Maslow once said “If a man has a why, he can plant any how” and that is so true. For me, understanding WHY I was starting my business and getting really clear on my vision and goals was the hardest but most critical step. Once I realized my WHY it fueled my passion and gave more meaning to all the other work I had to do to get my business off the ground!

What advice would you give to someone starting a small business today?

Try not to let what others are doing or their opinions influence you too much. Listen to yourself and follow your own vision because that is truly when you fall into your purpose and find your passion. Trust the nudges you get along the way and have fun with it!
